Open to jazz studies majors and minors as well as non-jazz and non-music majors, the ensemble provides an accessible path to participate in high-level jazz performance while studying in Akron, Ohio. Guided by dedicated faculty and led by UA student groups, this ensemble is part of a broader Jazz Studies program that includes both traditional and contemporary approaches to jazz education.

From its roots with the Birth of the Cool Ensemble—an UA student-led group founded by Ephraim Miller—the program has grown into a dynamic collective with expanded instrumentation and a commitment to both scholarly understanding and vibrant performance.
