History
The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra was originally commissioned for an educational documentary film called The Instruments of the Orchestra. The work is subtitled Variations And Fugue On A Theme Of Henry Purcell. The piece is based on a simple hornpipe from Abdelazer, a play for which Purcell composed incidental music in 1695. The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, opus 34, was written by Benjamin Britten in 1964. The original performance featured the London Symphony Orchestra and was conducted by Malcolm Sargent.
