About 4 Star Theater
Welcome to 4 Star Theater, a cherished independent cinema in San Francisco operated by CinemaSF under the 4 Star brand. Located at 2200 Clement Street, this intimate venue blends classic repertory programming with contemporary screenings. With a rich history dating back to La Bonita in 1913 and a 2022 reopening, the theater continues to be a neighborhood staple for film lovers and cultural events.
Plan your visit with ease—we’ve got you covered on seating, parking, transit, and nearby amenities so you can secure your seats and enjoy the show without hassle.
Seating and access: The main auditorium seats approximately 140–150 patrons, offering an intimate viewing experience. A secondary screen previously used as a cinema has been repurposed; it is not used for film screenings at this time. Arrive a bit early to settle in and enjoy the closest connections to the on-screen action.
Parking: City lots at 5732 Geary St and 421 18th Ave provide parking options nearby. Metered street parking is also available in surrounding blocks. If you’re driving, check for any posted time limits or street cleaning schedules that may affect your visit.
Transit: Muni serves the area with routes 1, 29, and 38 nearby, making it accessible from across San Francisco without a car. Consider public transit for a relaxed trip to the theater and easy street-friendly connections.
Nearby hotels: For visitors looking to stay nearby, Hotel Del Sol is located at 3100 Webster St, and The Laurel Inn at 444 Presidio Ave offers comfortable options within a short ride or walk. These properties pair well with a night at the cinema, especially when pairing theme nights or repertory programs.
Notable history: 4 Star Theater has a storied past—from its early days as La Bonita (opened 1913), to Star Theatre (1927), and then 4-Star Theatre (1946). After a renovation, the venue reopened in 2022 and continues to host memorable repertory screenings, including special events like the annual Always Be My Maybe showings and other Asian cinema showcases, as well as community celebrations like film festivals and revival programming.
