About Ambassador Theatre - St. Louis

Although the original Ambassador Theatre site in downtown St. Louis is no longer standing, the Ambassador Theatre in St. Louis remains a landmark in local architectural and entertainment history. Built in 1925–1926 as a grand movie palace designed by the famed architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, the venue was renowned for its terra cotta griffins, lavish French Renaissance styling, and a lavish program that opened with Pals First, live performances, an orchestra, and a Wurlitzer organ. The theater originally seated about 3,000 attendees before a 1953 remodel reconfigured the space to roughly 1,400 seats as the Ambassador Cinerama Theatre. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) since March 29, 1983. Today, the Ambassador Theatre name endures in local memory as a symbol of the city’s golden-age entertainment era.
