About Chippewa Square
Chippewa Square is a historic public square in the heart of Savannah, bounded by Bull Street to the north and south and East and West McDonough Street to the east and west. It centers on the James Oglethorpe Monument (unveiled in 1910) and is famously tied to the Forrest Gump bench scene filmed on the square’s north side. The Savannah Theatre, dating back to 1818, sits at 222 Bull Street, making Chippewa Square a centerpiece of Savannah’s architectural and cultural heritage. With a venue capacity of about 200, the square hosts a variety of public events, ceremonies, and community gatherings throughout the year.
Whether you’re attending a local Armistice Day celebration or a community event, secure your seats and plan ahead. Parking around Chippewa Square is limited, so consider nearby city lots and garages such as the Civic Center Lot west of Orleans Square and the Liberty Street Parking Deck. For getting around, take advantage of the free Downtown DOT shuttles or the Chatham Area Transit (CAT) fixed routes. If you’re staying nearby, a short stroll can connect you to some of Savannah’s best dining and lodging. We’ve highlighted nearby lodging and dining partners to help you find comfortable, convenient options during your visit.
