- DIMA operated as a private music conservatory in Detroit from 1914 to 1970.
- In 1957 the school relocated to facilities at 200 E Kirby (John R and Kirby).
- In 1970 DIMA merged with the Detroit Music Settlement School to form the Detroit Community Music School.
- The Detroit Community Music School later became part of the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in 1984, and its lineage was passed to Marygrove College to form the Institute of Music and Dance around 2000.
