About Dyer Observatory

Dyer Observatory is a historic university astronomical observatory owned by Vanderbilt University, nestled on nine acres in Brentwood, just outside Nashville. Housed in a landmark building and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the observatory hosts programs like Telescope Nights, Meet the Astronomer evenings, Daytime Open House Tours, and community concerts such as Bluebird on the Mountain. Note: the venue is currently closed for renovation through June 2026, but information here remains helpful for planning future visits and events.

Parking is available in a large gravel lot in front of the observatory with attendants for larger gatherings. Parking is free. Rideshare services are accepted for most events, with a note for Bluebird on the Mountain concerts. There is no dedicated on-site transit, so most guests drive or rideshare. For large events, plan extra time for access and load-in. Nearby Brentwood and Nashville hotels offer convenient options for overnight stays, and area dining provides a range of choices for before or after your visit.

Seating capacities vary by venue area and configuration: the Main Observatory Building seats about 90 (theater/lecture seating up to 100 in some setups; standing capacity around 120). The Observatory Library offers indoor seating options including dinner seating up to 80 and theater-style seating up to 100. The Outdoor Back Patio accommodates up to 250 seated (or 300 standing). For events that include performances or lectures, “Date to be announced” or “RESCHEDULED from its original date” details will appear where applicable.
