Historically known by several names—Little Theatre, Rivoli, Europa, Cinema, Vanguard Playhouse—the venue moved to its current address in 333 Madison Ave during 1997–1998 and remains a cornerstone of Detroit’s cultural landscape. The Gem Theatre has hosted notable events from a 2006 ABC Jimmy Kimmel Live! appearance to a 2016 Hillary Clinton/Bernie Sanders town hall and recent opera performances in 2024.
