Since opening in 1985 and undergoing major renovations in 2002–2004, SEF has served as a hub for basketball, volleyball, athletics, and concerts. The venue is currently operated under a 49-year lease with Olympiacos BC (announced in 2025) to upgrade and manage the arena, continuing its legacy as a central sports and events site for Athens and the wider region.
