About Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

Welcome to Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, a cooperative effort between the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy. Located in Chase County, Kansas, this preserved tallgrass prairie offers expansive vistas, wildlife viewing, and ranger-led programs. Access is by vehicle to the surrounding byway and on foot or by guided tours within the prairie. Best of all, there is no entrance fee, so you can explore the landscape and experiences at your own pace.

Plan your day around the Visitor Center, where you’ll find restrooms, water, exhibits, a bookstore, and helpful rangers. Keep in mind center hours vary by season, with May–October typically from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and November–April from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Parking includes four lots, with the Visitor Center lot offering accessible spaces during business hours and after hours; buses or trailers can pull through the Visitor Center lot. Personal vehicles don’t travel inside the prairie itself, but you can enjoy prairie views along the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway (KS-177) from the byway and traverse the prairie on foot or via ranger-led tours.
