Originally a hotspot at 6 Whitworth Street, the Wheel helped define Northern Soul nights and hosted legendary performers. Today, the Twisted Wheel experience continues at AREA Manchester (50 Sackville Street, M1 3WF), where two rooms offer dynamic live music and club nights. Seating, Parking & Venue Information
- Opened 1963 at Brazennose Street, Manchester (Left Wing Coffee Bar prior to adopting the Twisted Wheel name).
- Relocated to 6 Whitworth Street (Whitworth Street) around 1966; the Whitworth Street venue became a landmark for Northern Soul.
- The Whitworth Street building was demolished in 2012–2013 to make way for a hotel (Legends/other use followed); the Twisted Wheel as a named venue effectively ended at that site.
- The wheel’s legacy continued with rebrands and nostalgia nights; the Twisted Wheel Club later operated from Night People (105-107 Princess Street) and two-room setups featured the Twisted Wheel room.
- As of October 2023, Twisted Wheel Club/ Basement 66 operates at AREA Manchester (50 Sackville Street, M1 3WF) with ongoing events.
- Current venue capacities: Night People ~450 standing; Area Manchester Main Floor up to 400 standing (150 seated), Basement Floor up to 150 (reception).
- Notable acts historically associated with the Wheel include Tina Turner, Ike Turner, Sam & Dave, Geno Washington, The Hollies and The Spencer Davis Group.
- Area Manchester is located near Sackville Gardens with transit options (Piccadilly and Oxford stations, St Peter’s Square tram stop) and has parking available.
