About American Opera Initiative
The American Opera Initiative (AOI) is Washington National Opera’s celebrated commissioning program for contemporary American opera. Traditionally presenting three world-premiere one-act operas featuring Cafritz Young Artists in the casts, AOI brings fresh, bold storytelling to the nation’s capital. This season, the program is closely tied to acclaimed conductor Robert Spano, who has led AOI premieres including works featuring performers like Mickey Dee and the Eclipse with vocalist Michelle Mariposa as Sophie.
Originally scheduled to take place at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater on January 24, 2026, with performances at 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM, AOI's January 24 date experienced postponement as the company relocated March productions to Lisner Auditorium.
