About Riviera Theatre

The Riviera Theatre in New York City was a legendary early 20th-century movie palace part of the Fox Circuit, located on Broadway at 97th Street. With a seating capacity of 1,718, it hosted top-tier attractions during the Subway Circuit era and even burlesque revues in its heyday. The building and adjacent components evolved over time, with the Riviera reportedly reopened in 1949 and later demolished in 1976 to make way for a residential tower. While the site is no longer a functioning venue, its memory remains a notable chapter in New York’s entertainment history. This page provides historical context, seating references, and practical details for visitors researching the Riviera area, including transit options, parking guidance, and nearby hotel and dining recommendations.

Whether you’re exploring the neighborhood’s cinema heritage or planning a visit to the Upper West Side vicinity, we’ve got you covered with practical information about access and nearby amenities. While the Riviera Theatre no longer hosts performances, the surrounding Broadway corridor and nearby parks, cultural institutions, and dining spots continue to attract locals and visitors alike. For current entertainment needs, consider nearby performing arts venues and the broader Manhattan theater scene. We’ve included affiliate partner recommendations to help you find convenient lodging and dining options during your stay.
