San Diego Opera has been a cornerstone of Southern California culture since 1965, drawing on a lineage that begins with the San Diego Opera Guild (founded 1950) and the San Diego Opera Association (incorporated 1965). The company stages world-class operatic productions primarily at the San Diego Civic Theatre, with occasional performances at the Balboa Theatre. Beyond performances, SD Opera runs a robust education program that reaches about 100,000 school children annually across San Diego County and Northern Mexico. In 2022–23, the organization earned the AMA Sandie Award for Excellence in Branding, highlighting its commitment to artistic excellence and strong branding. In 2025, Opera America recognized SD Opera for its anti-harassment and civil workplace training program, reflecting a healthy, professional environment. As we look ahead, the 2025–2026 season brings Pagliacci, The Barber of Seville, Carmen, and Fellow Travelers to the Civic Theatre stage. Official ticketing is available through sdopera.org and Ticketmaster. Follow along with updates on the company’s official channels for the latest news and upcoming shows.
